How many times have you thought to yourself: there’s so much to do in New York City, so why aren’t I getting out more? The unfortunate truth is that, whether you’re breaking the bank with daycare bills or tiring out all of your relatives and friends by asking them to chase around your little ones while you work, work, and then work some more, it can be a real feat to snag me or we time in the city that never sleeps.

But there’s good news, too. Professional babysitting agencies are here to help you reclaim your romance, sanity, or both.

UrbanSitter
Whether you need a full-time nanny or a sitter for a few hours, UrbanSitter is one of the quickest and most efficient ways to book a caretaker online. Parents create an account on their website, search for qualified babysitters by date or time, and can even pay online. A Facebook account is required to use the site, but this may work to your advantage as it becomes easier to see the sitters who have been recommended by friends or parents in your area. During the registration process, you are asked to type in the names and ages of your children, as well as any schools or local organizations you belong to—all of which allow you to connect with similar minded parents who can recommend sitters. You can search for caretakers who speak a foreign language, own a car, or have experience caring for infants or children with special needs. Each babysitter has his or her own profile, which includes a photo, personal information, a link to a background check, and even testimonials from their client parents. Prices range from about $12/hour to $17/hour and seem commensurate with experience.

Metropolitan Sitters
Parents who place a premium on their caretaker’s educational background will be pleased to learn that this boutique babysitting service, which operates in Manhattan, Dumbo and Park Slope in Brooklyn, and Astoria in Queens, only employs experienced sitters who are either college graduates or currently enrolled in college. Mom and elementary school teacher Brooke Woodard founded the company after moving to The Big Apple from the Midwest—proof that she knows just how difficult it is to find reliable sitters in a huge metropolis. Parents pay a $25 monthly membership fee, which then grants them access to the following hourly babysitting rates: $20/hour for one or two children and $22/hour for three children. Rates will be negotiated if you have more than three children or need a sitter for overnight, vacation trips, or on the weekend. Parents are also expected to pay for a sitter’s cab fare if they return home after 9 p.m. A few of the babysitters are featured on the website.
