I recently celebrated my son’s birthday and, as usual, we had a backyard party filled with kiddie pools, older relatives, and lawn chairs. It was a nice party and my son had a good time, but I think backyard parties should be left to family barbecues and three-day weekends from now on. He’s just turned five years old, which means he is officially old enough to start telling me what he really wants to do on his birthday—and I’m pretty sure eating Auntie Gertrude’s potato salad isn’t it. So next year I’m giving him some new options.

With that said, here’s a roundup of themed party places in Staten Island for any kid who knows what they love to do and wants to spend their birthday doing it!

Spa Di Da
If your little one loves all things glamorous and pretty, a Spa party will be perfect. All parties include manicures, pedicures, karaoke, pizza, invitations, and refreshments. Additional party packages can include activities like make your own lip gloss, make your own fragrance, photo favors, glitter tattoos, and hair or makeup design and more.

Staten Island Skating Pavilion
Your child doesn’t have to have a winter birthday to have a fun ice skating party. Staten Island Skating Pavilion is the only skating rink open on the Island all year round. Parties are two hours long and include admission and skate rental, pizza, soda, party hostess, invitations, cupcakes, and goody bags. Private skating lessons and special catering options are available as well. Skating parties are held during open skate time.

Build-A-Bear Workshop
“Celebearate” your child’s birthday at Build-A-Bear, where each child gets to make and take home a new bear of their very own. Build-A-Bear is located in the Staten Island mall and parties take place during regular business hours; unfortunately this location doesn’t have the option to serve food (including cake). If your child is a huge teddy bear fan and you don’t have too many guests, head over to one of the nearby kid-friendly restaurants after the party to continue the festivities-- such as the Applebee's on the lower level of the mall.

Created By You
Bring out your child’s creative side with a party at this ceramic and pottery studio. Kids can have themed painting parties like cupcake decorating parties where each guest paints his or her own cupcake plate, princess-themed painting parties, tea parties where each child paints his or her own teacups, as well as clay creation parties, tye dye parties, and plaster-painting parties. Parties are two hours long and pizza is provided. If your child loves painting and pottery but you’d rather have the festivities in your own home, there is also an option to have a Created By You party to go—they provide all the essentials you will need.

Cousins Paintball
I can’t think of anything more exciting for a teen or pre-teen’s birthday than a paintball party. Party packages are available for up to ten kids, ages 10-16, and the pricier package allows for two hours of play as a private group. Food is not included in the party package but tables and chairs are available and food can be ordered from Yo Mama’s Empanada’s Grill.

Your little builder will love having a LEGO party hosted by Bricks 4 Kidz. You provide the place, they provide a host, interactive play with a giant tub of LEGO’s, model-building, mini-figure factories for each guest, goody bags, invitations and thank you cards, and more.
